What Causes Black Spots on Tongue
Seeing black spots on tongue can be quite alarming. You may think that something serious is going on with your body. However, you do not have to worry too much since most of the causes of black spots on tongue may not really be source of significant alarm.
Causes of Black Spots on Tongue
Black spots on tongue may be cause by several reasons. Some of these may include:
Hyper-pigmentation is the presence of too much pigment in your body. This may result to in discoloration in your skin, hair, eyes and tongue. Genetics can cause hyper-pigmentation.
If you are uncomfortable with hyper-pigmentation, you may talk with your health care provider how to remove the discoloration through laser techniques.
2. Piercing of tongue
Some people who have black spots on tongue may be due to tongue piercing. Piercing of tongue may result to losing of pigments especially in the area where piercing was done. This may result to black spots.
3. Alcohol and cigarette smoking
Have you been drinking alcohol excessively or cigarette smoking? If yes, then it can be the reason you have black spots. Too much consumption of alcohol and smoking may result to hairy tongue. Hairy tongue does not really literally mean hair but it is fungus that thrives in your tongue.
The black spots will reduce on its own if you stop drinking alcohol and avoid cigarette smoking.
4. Tongue Injury
Your tongue is also susceptible to injury. You may accidentally bit your tongue which may cause cuts that may appear with black patches.
5. Oral Cancer
Oral cancer is probably the most serious reason of dark spots on your tongue. Aside from black spots on tongue, other symptoms may also include lumps in the mouth. Some people with oral cancer also complain difficulty in swallowing.
